Who Do You Think You Are?

Almost all the table is red, under the effect of the German pig and piglet stock exchange level.

Meanwhile the heat wave is hitting new values and areas. In Spain values reached 44-46° C, the live weight of the pigs delivered to the slaughterhouses decreased with 1,6 kg. In the Netherlands temperature reached 38-39° C, most of the Dutsch pig farms are not technically equipped to handle this heat.

All the pig livestock sector questioned the level of price reduction in Germany. In several debates with meat traders and slaughterhouses the justification was that: WE have lost the competitiveness of the European pork on the Asian market. Well, I have to do some remarks…

WE, as pig sector, have several components. I would separate it in 3 categories: the livestock producers(farmers), the slaughterhouses and the meat traders. While there are some enterprises covering all the 3 areas, most of the business is handled by separate entities.

WE, the farmers, are the ones that produce the raw material for the other two players. When YOU, slaughterhouses and meat traders, push us in the red zone, then YOU will have trouble in finding the raw material for YOUR activity. WE, the farmers, produce the pigs in Europe, according to environmental and animal welfare regulations that are way above the ones of the United States or Brasilia, to whom you are comparing us. WE, the farmers, use high amount of soia protein, imported from  the United States or Brasilia. Our domain, the livestock production, are overregulated, more and more farms are going out of business in the European Union. I may be wrong, but did WE, the farmers, hear YOU, slaughterhouses and meat traders, rising YOUR voice to protect our activity, as your raw material suppliers?!

Who do YOU think YOU are?
