Dear readers,
Some positive evolutions related to the swine industry:
- A study, conducted by Nikhil V. Dhurandhar from Texas Tech University , published in the journal Obesity , concludes that the consumption of unprocessed red meat has no significant effect on weight gain , obesity , or related diseases such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, or cardiovascular problems. According to the study, the researchers conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of 19 human clinical trials, using rigorous methods that ruled out the biases of previous studies based on self-reported surveys.
- TheWorld Organization for Animal Health(WOAH )and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) have launched a joint initiative under the Global Framework for the Progressive Control of Transboundary Animal Diseases. Its goal is to bring together governments, businesses and experts to help countries cope with African swine fever (ASF), which today poses a threat not only to the pig industry but also to global food security.

(Maybe) funny news:
- The NDR Nordmagazin reports that experts at the Research Institute for Farm Animal Biology in Dummerstorf are currently researching possible positive effects of using a treadmill in pig pens! The idea is that if the pigs can be persuaded to exercise more voluntarily on such a treadmill, they could become healthier and fitter. How far this deviant “animal welfare” tendency will go and who is paying it?
Last Day of Summer
According to the WOAH, from January 2024 to May 2025, ASF was recorded in 51 countries and territories, with 14,918 outbreaks: 3,678 in domestic pigs and 11,240 in wild hogs, while losses in pig farms reached 605,225 heads. The geography of the spread of the infection in 2024–2025 indicates its rapid penetration beyond the previously affected regions. Three countries reported ASF cases for the first time: Montenegro, Albania and Sri Lanka.
While some achievements in the field of modified live vaccines already give hope for controlling ASF, using poor-quality drugs not only fail to protect animals but can also accelerate the spread of infection. Such cases have been reported from Asian countries in the past years.
The Chief Veterinary Inspectorate of Poland has confirmed an ASF the twelfth outbreak of African swine fever in a pig farm in Suliborek, West Pomeranian Voivodeship. The herd where the disease occurred contained 4,465 pigs, which will be culled as a result of the outbreak. This is the second outbreak of swine fever to occur in the Recz commune within a month. On July 29th, the disease was confirmed in the town of Sulibórz, approximately 6 km from the current outbreak. Nearly 3,200 pigs were slaughtered at that time. New outbreaks are also reported in Serbia, Croatia.
Dear readers, this year the summer tourist season started later, and didn’t bring the expected barbecue consumption. However, we can still enjoy some good weather, next Sunday is the last day of summer!
